About the Post Viral Project

The Post Viral Project was created to help anyone struggling with their post viral experience. When my symptoms were their worst, I couldn’t concentrate at all, let alone research what was happening inside my body. The Post Viral Project provides clear, comprehensive information about post viral syndrome, how it affects the body, and how you can help yourself.

My Story

Before I got sick, I was a bright person in my early 30s. I regularly lifted weights, walked my dog twice every day, and loved spending time outside. I didn’t know how blessed I was to be in good health.

I was exposed to a confirmed RSV case on Thanksgiving 2023, and it’s possible that I was exposed to covid too. I started feeling symptoms a week later, and it was worse than anything I’d ever experienced. Constant coughing bruised my ribs, and I couldn’t do much more than lay on the couch for 4 weeks.

I started feeling a little better in January 2024. I had always worked out to get over last bit of a cold, so I tried that thinking I’d be back to my old self in no time. That is not what happened. Instead, working out morphed and exacerbated my symptoms until I could no longer recognize myself.

My post viral experience

These are the symptoms I experienced:

  • heart palpitations
  • chest pressure and pinching
  • high resting heart rate
  • heard my pulse in my ear
  • strange sensations in my arms and legs
  • arms going completely numb while I slept
  • shaking legs
  • bulging veins on the back of my hands
  • itchy veins in my legs, the palm of my left hand, and left wrist
  • yellow, bubbly phlegm
  • mouth sores
  • difficulty swallowing
  • dry mouth and chapped lips
  • dry eyes
  • eyes sensitive to light and screens, especially at night
  • rash on my chest, up my neck, and covering my face
  • body producing an ammonia smell when showering
  • nightly panic attacks
  • constant anxiety
  • insomnia
  • physical exhaustion

I went to urgent care and got an EKG. Everything came back “normal.” I followed up with my primary care doctor, and they confirmed that my heart, lungs, and arteries were functioning properly. I wore a Holter monitor for 24 hours, and there was nothing to be concerned about.

I couldn’t accept just waiting for things to get better, so I spent every moment I could researching post viral syndrome and long covid. Hundreds of links and forums later, I finally found information that helped me. I just wish the information had been in one clear, easy-to-read space, so I could have helped myself sooner.
